My Future Learning Goals

My future in education, and as an educator in general, is at this point very undefined. I know that I very much enjoy working in a school setting, but to what extent I am not sure. Currently, I work as an athletic director and physed/health teacher, and I much prefer my administrative position over my classroom position. Given that I want to continue to work in schools I believe my future includes becoming a school administrator. Once I gain experience as a school administrator I would like to become an assistant superintendent in a large school district, or superintendent of small district on my own. Lastly, with my pe/health background I would like to become a certified strength trainer, so that I can provide my school with additional services.

The criteria I used to select my goals were quite simple. The first question I asked myself was, what do I want to become? I know that I want to work in school administration and therefore choose to become a certified school administrator. Then I asked, what’s the pinnacle of education, and to me that answer was to become a superintendent. Lastly, I thought, what skills do I want to improve in the short term, and that led me to becoming a strength trainer, as I have the skill set and education but have never followed through with the certification.

In order to achieve my goal of becoming a certified strength trainer I must take an exam. This exam

will test me on the knowledge that I gained through experience and education, and add credibility to the

knowledge I already possess. By becoming certified I will be able to better teach strength and

conditioning to physical education and health students, offer personal training, group training, and work

with specific sports teams. In order to complete this task I will use the resources found at

http://certification.acsm.org/

In the future I would also like to take the necessary coursework, tests, and certifications to

become a certified school administrator. This process will allow me to become a school principal

while also moving me one step closer to becoming a superintendent. In order to achieve this goal I must take additional coursework that is very specific. In order to learn more about the requirments I will use this resource for the Michigan State University School of Education website http://education.msu.edu/ead/k12/nsace.asp . Along with this MSU resource I will speak with the various principals that I have gotten to know over the years in the area.

The last and most ambitious goal I have for the future is to prepare myself to become a school district superintendent. This process is a long and arduous one, as an advanced professional degree is desired, and years of experience must be obtained. Along with the professional degree, certain skills must be obtained in order to achieve success. In order to best prepare myself for this process I will contact the former superintendents at the Michigan Leadership Institute http://www.mileader.com/ . The MLI helps to identify, train, and place superintendents across the state of Michigan. By working with the MLI you immediately gain credibility as an administrator, and benefit from the knowledge of the many former superintendents that work there.  In addition, I will seek the guidance of the superintendents that I currently work for and with to gain insider knowledge and tips.

My future learning goals vary greatly and will undoubtedly lead me in the right direction. Even if I don’t accomplish any one goal completely, simply attempting them will make me a better person, and lead me in a positive direction. By laying out my goals and a general guideline on how to achieve those goals, I am better preparing myself for success. I will always prefer to set my sights extremely high and then fall short, rather than to complete simple goals that hold little value.
